Micro-Aid
First class BDes Product Design final year project.
BRIEF
To create a product that helps people in the early-mid stages of dementia diagnosis maintain independant living.
Execution
Through thorough research I found that meal prep was a key problem, with various issues arrising when using a microwave. Problems included leaving it on too long, putting wrong items in the microwave, power settings not correct or forgetting that meals have been put in there.
Targeted people diagnosed with early to mid stage dementia who were living independently.
Extensive research was conducted, consulting with professionals and regularly attending coffee mornings with full time carers to gain insight into the challenges for people living alone with dementia.
Used Solidworks to create models and prototypes, and Keyshot to render the designs. The final prototype was created using various forms of manufacture including vacuum forming, 3D printing, electronic circuits and laser cutting.
The result
The final design aimed to combat many of the problems, key features of the design below:
High contrast components
Easy grip knobs/handles
Powder settings hidden around the side
Sensor on tray to avoid microwaves being left on and exploding with nothing inside
Reduced steps in user journey
Raised numbers and text
Ability for preset time/power by carer/family members
Alarm will ring consistantly until door opened AND food removed.
Product Reception
The final product was recieved very well by professionals in the field, as well as full time carers who were keen to purchase the product, asking when it would be available on the market. The product was entered into the Designability award and was a finalist.
